A puppy mill, sometimes known as a puppy farm, is a commercial dog breeding facility that is operated with an emphasis upon profits above animal welfare and is often in substandard conditions regarding the well-being of dogs in their care. Similar types of operations exist for other animals commonly kept as pets or used as feed for other animals. The term can be applied to operations involving other animals commercially bred for profit, e.g. "kitty mills." There are an estimated 4,000 puppy mills in the U.S. that produce more than half a million puppies a year. Commercial kennels may be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture which may inspect the kennels routinely.
For-profit breeding on a smaller scale is sometimes referred to as backyard breeding.

Story about mills

Two men were charged after 38 puppies were detected in a van full of feces without food, water, and space to exercise. They were transporting the dogs from Oklahoma to Flordia when a passby truck discovered them. There was a foul stench when they opened the car. 150 overheated puppies were in a cargo van without ventilation, only 4 survived.:( People are so mean these day.

Puppy mills have been around for deacades! They would breed dogs and usually kill them or sell them VERY cheap to other mills! They are abandoned all by themselves in all kinds of weather!

The Scene of Puppy Mills

Dogs cramped cages made of wood and wired mesh was an horrible scene! They weren't treated fairly and some got killed! There was a really bad scent from the dead corspe of the dogs and feces! We almost barfed! The sight of the cages and dogs were quite sad, its more then we could take. It may not sound bad, but its more terrifying to see.
